The Mod Thread

Postby Mortis » Fri Jan 12, 2007 16:28

With the release of Insects Infestation and Iron Grip 1.3 for HL2, I thought I'd make a list of the mods "to play", in others words, ones that warrant actual playing.

Source

Empires: http://www.empiresmod.com/
The Hidden: http://www.hidden-source.com/
Dystopia: http://www.dystopia-game.com/
Eternal Silence: http://www.eternal-silence.net/

All four mods will receive a "major" update shortly (this month, probably).

Unconfirmed play experience:
Insects Infestation: http://www.insectsinfestation.com/index.php
Iron Grip: http://isotx.com/

Unreal Tournament 2004

Killing Floor: http://www.killingfloor.freedomsnet.net/ http://mods.moddb.com/3828/killing-floor/
Out of Hell: http://outofhell.net/ http://mods.moddb.com/1879/out-of-hell/
Air Buccaneers: http://ludocraft.oulu.fi/airbuccaneers/ http://mods.moddb.com/1798/airbuccaneers/

Iron Grip

Postby Mortis » Fri Jan 12, 2007 17:18

A small note on Iron Grip, by the way.

Just so you know, it has been sadly plagued with excessive lag throughout its existence and while there have been some promises of fixing the problems, there are early reports that the problems remain unchanged even in the latest release (version 1.3):
Source: http://www.isotx.com/forums/index.php?t ... 9#msg25349
Sry to disturb the hype but,I was playing (I was the first player,no really,I looked and there where 13 server, but all empty,I was the first!) back to topic...I was playing and when about 6 people joined, pings where going through the roof,500and over, lag as hell.

I know you optimized the game, but the lag problem is still present, and it destroys the entire game, people start leaving the server, and if there isnt anything happening anytime soon,I'm afraid IG will have no active players again after a while because everyone gets pissed by this lag.

I can personally confirm this as far as version 1.21 goes - we tried it on a local area network with only six players and it was hopelessly unplayable. If a game doesn't run smoothly on a LAN...

Update: I found a partial explanation for the issues (that is, sloppy programming just as expected):
Source:http://www.isotx.com/forums/index.php?topic=2867.msg24985#msg24985
The cause of lag is the AI. The AI was made for singleplayer. They where hacked to work for multiplayer; meaning that they use up a lot of CPU time and have a lot of things that need to be tracked, all of which need to be sent to the client. We are probobly going to re-write a lot of the AI to make them simpler, as they don't need to be as complex like in the singleplayer game.

I've moved the content of this thread over to http://www.slowdays.org/kaka/pie.php?Modifications - it'll be nicer to work with a list of mods there :) For actual discussions of mods I think we can keep this thread open.

Pirates Vikings and Knights II: http://www.pvkii.com/

I've been anxiously waiting for beta 2 to arrive. Should happen soon (should have been happening soon for two months now).
Beta 1 is lots of fun too, really would like to try it on LAN since this mod is not too serious.

Ooh! I wasn't sure when they were coming out with a new release. I'd also like to point out that the new 2.0 version of Empires is going to be released on November 30th (tomorrow!). I've been looking forward to this a lot.

Furthermore, there have been rumours of Eternal Silence coming out with a new version rather soon to follow up Insurgency and Empires.

Off Limits is supposedly rather finished as well, so a release should be expected sooner or later. There are some pretty cool pix of the levels in the mod at http://www.wesleytack.com/level.html but I can't help but wonder if the level design scales aren't completely overkill. In my experience the requirement of a high player count is rather lethal to a mod.

A new version of Killing Floor is also on the pipeline!

This is starting to give me a little hope for an Air Buccaneers release for Unreal Tournament 3!
If this really happens, then I'm like omg!

I'd buy the game just for ABU and it've be the last part to drive me to buy new pieces for my olden goldie computer!

And, atm I'm downloading Empires 2.0 :)

Hmm, at least in Internet playing it seems the servers lag like hell.

Reptile1992 from PeliPlaneetta.net wrote:Hyvää:

- Kentät on hyvin tehtyjä
- Zombeja!
- Vaatii tiimityöskentelyä että selviää

Huonoa:

Freely translated:

Good:
- Maps are well done.
- Zombies!
- One needs teamwork to survive
Bad:
- Zombies get killed with 3 shotgun ammos or 2 9mm clips and because of that they always win
- There's too less ammos
- In most of the servers, there's just a horrible lag
- There's no missions in maps, one only runs around as long until everyone are dead

One other said the animations are quite full of bugs too. Also, I've heard that the hitboxes doesn't take different damage. Like when you hit zombie to the head, it hurts as much as if you shot it to the leg. But I've also heard good about the mod, though not really what's so good about it. Perhaps the feeling or something.

About the servers, they might be better when playing in Local Area Network, and not in Internet. Though with Dorden's 8MB Internet I think it's possible for us to play in Internet too, but when the servers seem to be so laggy I think we shouldn't do that :D But we'll see.

http://www.fistful-of-frags.com/index.php

Fistful of Frags has been updated now and since. Fast work the guys do!
Few improvements in beta 1.2, first I disliked but now after today's play session I really started liking the new changes in notierity.
I've been playing this a bit with Dorden and sometimes with Ripatius joining us too! Great western Sourcemod, I really like it.

Air Buccaneers got its first working server for years now! It's an old UT2004 mod Ludocraft from Finland made back then. Every Sunday there's gaming sessions starting 18:30 GMT!

Server Info:
:[SB]: Soulbreakers Air Buccaneers
IP: 217.163.23.19:7777
Location: UK (London)
Playercount: 16
Pass=sb

Private server with password, because it's cheper! But, if you feel like trying the best mod ever (I've been talking about it in Lan blogs too :) ), feel free to search your old copy of ut2k4 in the ashes, and download the mod here!

Also, a video (made by Svenstaro) of last Sunday's gaming session is published in Youtube. You can watch it by clicking over here!

Happy Winter-Een-Mas! I've been playing few mods and Final Fantasy I (Dawn of Souls version)

Fistful of Frags (or FoF for short) is indeed pretty cool, and one has to wonder why it took so long for a team to release a western mod for Source. I played it for the first time yesterday and found it a lot of fun. My only criticism is that they've failed to produce any kind of help file or system for starting players, and I found myself having to learn the game through making errors. I know it's a paradigm, but I'm more into preventative measures myself!

Still, there's just that something special about toting guns in the wild wild west.

Yeah thatä's actually quite true. Though it's not so hard to learn the game afterall!
Nowadays ppl in the only ping less than 100 server are getting quite good in handing the western guns! The old gunslinger like I, just can't keep myself killing ppl as much as dying actually! Though still I know the tactics quite well to be still in the top of the ppl.

One annoying thing I have discovered. IN the new "Few dollars more"-mode, there's this annoying bug sometimes, when the monies just disappear somewhere, the sign which tells the monies are there is on the air, but there's no monies. And when the times up, the monies will go to the team's bank. And that sucks, because it really destroyes the mode itself. Hope they'll fix it soon! Otherwise, great mod for fun!

It's a bummer how there are only ever two FoF servers with players on them - if you happen to miss the low-ping server, you're basically better off just closing the game :[
