Advertisements in Games

Postby Mortis » Sat Dec 09, 2006 17:07

News just in, Counter-Strike v1.6 will be flaunting in-game advertisements soon: http://www.csnation.net/articles.php/interview_231/2/.

There's such a good question in the article:

CS-Nation: While Steam's ability to dole out updates such as new maps or episodic content is unquestionably useful, some gamers are also cynical about some of the updates that Steam streams to their computer. Counter-Strike was first released over seven years ago, and 1.6 was released three years ago — is it reasonable to add such a controversial feature so long after the game "shipped"? Shouldn't gamers be able to factor in-game advertising in their decision to purchase a product?

I'm quite opposed to the idea of advertising tie-ins with games in general (I don't need to be force-fed details about the market, I can read, I have eyes and ears), but on top of that, I don't have to tell you how angry I'm about ingame ads for a MOD.

This is so wrong on several levels when the game in question happens to be CS1.6.

Unless you'd get a full-priced, new game free or for a very minimal price tag, I could somehow justify the adverts. It just seems that Valve's forgetting CS 1.6 is a mod. Merely selling it (like Day of Defeat) on store shelves these days is a crime against the gaming community. The whole Silver/Gold tie-in system is beyond obnoxious when you can still download the original files from the net.

Whatcha think? When will the ads reach CS:S? Very Happy
