"Sin Porn": Advertising, Games and Tits

Postby Mortis » Thu May 25, 2006 16:13

Ok, this is just a placeholder so that I get the concept of an article out the door. That's what message boards are about anyway. If you have any 2 cents I'd be glad to hear them.

Disclaimer: Most (If Not All) Images Will Have Pictures of More Or Less Clothed Females

I think http://www.actiontrip.com/comics/at_comic103.phtml illustrates the direction of analysis I'm trying to move towards. What I'm talking about here is the well-established practice of selling everything under the sun with female "attributes".

You all know how the streets of today are littered with advertisements that have girls in bikini. Selling other things than bikinis, too. And just as this reveals to us, the use of pretty girls is not limited to selling products to us men, it is also common to sell products to women like this as well. Peculiar.

I'm not going to touch the moral/ethic side of the "beautification" of advertising though. I'd like to look at the trend as a whole. So. What if we think about them games then? Almost all new-generation "adventure" games you see today seem to sport the obligatory female heroine (c.f. Syberias, Longest Journeys, Paradise, to mention a few).

If the main character is not female, however, then the player often has a pretty but feisty sidekick (SiN Episode, Half-Life 2, Broken Swords, Indiana Jones) that will take care of the advertising.

But are players complaining? I don't think so. Most SiN players I know in fact want -more- tits and seem to think people who are. In fact, with all the modability today's games offer, the effect is the following:

The real question is, what is the role of a beautiful woman in the society? All the adventure heroines seem forced, as if they didn't really belong where they are... do you need to have a flat chest to be taken seriously? What about the pretty girls, should they just flash their tits and create happiness that way, instead of fighting the mutants?

What do I know!

I see all the advertising breastism as the same thing you do when you need to deliver someone a note through a window or over an obstacle or something. You tie the note around a heavy rock. Or similarily, electromagnetic signals use carrier waves Idea Rolling Eyes

Anyhow it is an interesting question. In Knights of the Old Republic 2, I downloaded a mod that allowed my female companions to wear Leia-like bikini that had decent armor stats Very Happy ... Mad
In WoW, I'm currently playing a female night elf. Didn't take too long for me to make the happy realisation, that just about all pieces of armor and clothing in the game look a LOT skimpier on female wearers. Full body armor is for the unskilled, anyway. And I just have to stop by every human female NPC (or idling PC), because they got massive breasts, and every once in a while they sigh, making the breasts do a nice jiggle. Shocked Rolling Eyes

I dunno, all this was pretty useless chatter. All I gotta say is, entertainment is entertainment. Cool

There's just pornish porn, which i don't like. Lemme show an example:
http://www.xboxyde.com/leech_2615_en.html (the trailer!!) , i mean, what are they selling? x]

Then there's the more naughty "porn" which i am alright with, example: http://abyss.hubbe.net/gfx/covers/gms/l ... mac-lg.jpg

Beautiful women with brains don't have it easy i think, being harassed at work and not being able to focus on it properly, men are scum, we all know that. Girls are mean too.

And of course, like Armand says, who haven't been trying different angles when playing a girl in a game or looking at one... We do things we would like to do in real life but are stopped from by our ethics Razz

Someone brought up the "Dead or Alive" game series, which I should've remembered to mention. But the best of them all must be "Rumble Roses", which actually was the first game to make me pay attention to this topic! Let's see if I can find the notes I made about it Very Happy

/Edit:

I didn't, perhaps I deleted the article at some point. It delved into the age limits the game had received - I believe it received a lower rating in America based on its "lower" level of violence. Or something along those lines. I'll try googling it.

But as it is, pictures tell more than a 100 words:

And then!

http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=12424

A new study from the Consumer Electronics Association indicates that there are many more women gamers in the 25-34 demographic than males, largely because of the popularity of the casual games market, with card games like solitaire (pictured) and puzzle games like Tetris.

I remember Armand slightly questioning my motives some months back when he asked if I was actually going anywhere with the thread.

I'm really not too sure where you can go from here. There are plenty of alternatives after all... "Miss Best Boobs in CGs Poll", "A Critical Analysis of Marketing and Games", "The Empowerment of Girls in Games"... you know, all that jazz. Perspectives. Any good ideas?

Ah, this topic is so close to my heart, I wish I could concentrate the topic into an article with a focus...

In the meantime, here's a great quote:
Source: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue/77/6
This year at E3, while playing the upcoming MMOG title Soul of the Ultimate Nation from Webzen, I was positively giddy to discover that the half-skirt on the female Elementalist character actually flips up when she jumps into the air, exposing her shiny panties underneath. Talk about your fan service!

Haha, yeah! Though I guess what that article deals with is "covert" sexuality (if even that: Mostly it's just seeing something somewhere and then running with it Very Happy). This thread has been dealing with overt representations in which the sexual dimension is actually attempted and pursued Smile

Still, it's good to remember that to an extent, these things are in the eye of the beholder as well Very Happy Easy to forget when you irc.

Anyone missing? One obvious would be Elaine from Monkey Island of course. To me it feels like they've listed all the females shown in a video game, ever. Razz
