Basically, as far as artwork goes, the simpler the better.
That said, it's still important that we feel as artists that we can portray enough with the pixels in use - therefore I truly, duly feel that the more realistic chibi approach will be the best.
In that approach, battle scenes can effectively use the same character sprites if necessary.
